Recap: Pre-Compression, SF

Pre-Compression was tons of fun – thank you to everyone who came out to say hello and shake it with Quillface and the rest of us. We were able to connect many of our team who have previously only spoke on the phone – Bill Tubman from Reno, Tiki Todd who will be trucking us to the playa and Lefty and Shade – our PR support team based in Sacramento were all on hand. We met many new friends – designers, builders, revelers and many curious newbies we’re excited to see experience ‘home’ for the first time… Performance, DJs, Costumes, Friends and so much killer art is on it’s way to the playa. Please consider supporting another project (as well as increasing your donation to the Trojan Horse). OTIC Oasis will be incredibly special as will Tympani Lambada by Flaming Lotus Girls.

Artemis, Goddess of Archery

Our very own Artemis, Goddess of Archery

Hi my name is Nina, also known as Artemis in the Trojan Horse project. I was born in Seattle and it is Seattle that I still call my home. I’m an office manager for a local heavy equipment company, but my real love are my many hobbies .. belly dancing, fire dancing, kite flying, costuming, tai chi .. and now archery. :~)

As a child I always loved to dance and ballet was my world. Performing with a local children’s ballet company we toured Spain and Portugal for a month one summer long ago. Drinking in the culture of all that was Spain, I saw my first live Flamenco performance and the fire of the dance stole my heart .. my future was dancing.

In 2008 the adventure of a life time began .. I began studying belly dance with Leslie Rosen of Raqs Serpentine and my passion for dance grew deeper than ever imaginable. Studying with various local teachers and attending various workshops, my style of dance has become a fusion of American Caberet and Hip Hop with traces of ATS, Egyptian, Ballet, Salsa and Modern Dance.

Paperpony

The Paltry Sapien: They Burn Horses, Don’t They?

The Paltry Sapien, an international Web salon, has covered our project in their current issue. Their subject matter, as they put it, is everything that exists between the weird & the wonderful.

This year’s Burning Man will feature an enormous full-scale, EL-wire illuminated Trojan Horse, which, at sundown on the fifth night of the festival, will be lit on fire by burning arrows (aided by pyrotechnics), to much fanfare, mayhem, music and dance. But that will merely be the culmination of this project. At 20-tons, five stories tall, and encompassing three separate interior chambers, this equine behemoth is more than simply another wildfire at a festival notorious for pyro and large conflagrations. This Magnificent Icon

Watching a construction site, especially when something interesting is taking shape, is as fascinating as watching a structure burn. They mark out little geographical spots in our minds as a place where change, progress and the transient bustle of something uniquely human is transpiring, or as a place where under crackle and sparks of the “sun unwinding” itself from the confines of the burning timber, a local landmark is lost. The events hold our attention not unlike fine art; often defying a description of the nature of that grip. We spectate, watching the beams and posts find their proper place, and strain to discern where this skeleton fits in that almost utopian rendering attached to the barrier fence, or we watch as the smoke billows and flames lick into the night’s canopy, paradoxically wishing both the fire and the fire fighters good luck. Building and fire often occupy a place in our minds normally engaged by art, so much the richer experience to create this magnificent icon.

New Design for Flaming Arrows

Ozzie, Archery Master shoots a tethered flaming arrow

Ozzie - our Archery Master – and fellow archer Lee have found a way to keep the arrow flame from blowing out on the way to the target!

The secret is a cone shield tipped arrow! The design is similar to that used for the 1992 Olympics Torch Lighting Ceremony

Ozzie put up some informative pictures on how to make your own cone shield tips.

Film Director Named for Procession

Todd Darling

Todd Darling has been chosen by the Trojan Core Team to direct a film of the climactic last rites of passage of the Trojan Horse. He received his BA from UC Berkeley, and his MFA in Motion Pictures and Television from UCLA. Darling’s producing and directing credits include: “Año Nuevo,” which won the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Eric Sevareid Award; “Saviors of the Forest” (exec. producer), a feature documentary which screened at Sundance; “Farm Club” (director) for USA; and “Laguna Beach: The Real OC” (director) for MTV. Details about his vision for the film can be found here.

In addition to Darling’s work on the Grand March and Procession, the project will videotape the interactivities of the hundreds of Burners costumed as various Greek deities and mortals. Videographers will be needed Monday through Thursday on the Playa to cover events such as the re-enactment of a battle between Greek and Trojan soldiers, recreations of the story of Troy, and the children’s story hour.

The Trojan Team also hopes to continue recording its work between now and Burning Man. Videographers are needed for events such as the June 4 Recruiting Party at Golden Gate Park and SF’s Precompression and Seattle’s Solstice Parade on June 18. Volunteers should reply to the casting call.
