Top Playa Pyros Join Trojan Team

Black Rock FX

Black Rock FX signed on this week as the Horse’s Pyrotechnics Team with “Pyro Jack” Schroll as lead. The work of BRFX is the stuff of legend and includes pyro for the Angel of the Apocalypse and Mutopia by the Flaming Lotus Girls, Rock Opera, Megalopolis, Raygun Gothic Rocket, and Crude Awakening. The team has almost 20 members (six at the core), including the “Best Family in Pyro“ — Dad Dave Best (no relation to Temple builder David Best), daughter Britney, and son Carson.

A fixture at Burning Man, Schroll has been an inspector with the Fire Art Safety Team (FAST) since 2003, overseeing anything that burns on the playa. His fascination with fire and explosions began in Kansas City, where he grew up and there were no restrictions on age or explosive charge for buying fireworks.

The BRFX Team,” Schroll says, “just seems to have pyro in their blood. Once you’ve smelled the smoke, it doesn’t let you go. Most of the team do pyro as a hobby, but several are lucky enough to do it all year long.

Schroll lives in Walnut Creek, CA with his wife of 34 years, Tanya. A serious car guy, he runs a top auto repair shop, Mostly Mustangs, in West Oakland and for years owned the first GT350 off the production line. He’s been burning since 1996.

Volunteer Spotlight: Tom Harrison

Tom Harrison

Tom Harrison is undertaking a Herculean effort to raise money for the Trojan Horse Project. As part of the Trojan Horse-athon, he will be seeking pledges and sponsors to support his doing the Grouse Grind daily for a month. The Grind is a grueling 1.8 mile (almost 3 km) trail up the face of Grouse Mountain, near Vancouver, BC. The gain in elevation is literally breathtaking: 2,800 feet (850 meters). Tom is eager to begin his regimen, but the trail is still snowbound. He vows to do the trek on snow shoes if it doesn’t clear soon.

Originally from London, Tom now lives in Vancouver where he is an IT consultant. His first Burn was 2010, and he says, “It was one of the best weeks of my life, and I’m so looking forward to this year. I’m good at moving heavy objects long distances and  fascinated by classic civilizations, so the Trojan Horse is pretty much the perfect project for me.

Tom’s epic effort started when he bet a friend he could do the Grind for 30 straight days, a feat the friend thought impossible. To help him succeed in his self-imposed challenge, Tom has created an alter-ego:  Thales Heliodoros.

Thales, son of the sun god, Helios, was famed for his stubbornness, refusing several times to board Charon’s ferry. His attempts to cheat death enraged Hades, god of the underworld.  As punishment, Hades cursed Thales to climb all the world’s mountains for eternity.

When asked if he was daunted by the prospect of spending a month of his life giving new meaning to “the daily grind,” Thales replied, “I’ve been climbing mountains non-stop for 3,000 years and can do this Grouse thing before breakfast.” If you want to support Thales and the Trojan Horse Project, make a donation at www.trojanhorse2011.com/donations and please send him an e-mail: thales.heliodoros (at) live.co.uk or visit his Facebook page.

Coming soon: 72-hour worldwide webathon!!!

We’ll try a novel approach to playa philanthropy when we kick off a 72-hour worldwide webathon planned for June 17-18-19. It will feature live feeds to and from a moveable event in San Francisco and parties in such cities as Sydney, London, Vancouver, New York, and Chicago.  We’ll combine these feeds with video from fundraising house parties around the world and pre-recorded video, where volunteers demonstrate what they are doing for the horse, show their costumes , and offer suggestions for the project. In a process overseen by the Delphic Oracle, we will award prizes, including Burning Man tickets and meals in the belly of the beast, to webathon participants.

Stay tuned for details and start thinking of what you could put in your video or the Trojan House Party you could throw!

Call for Musicians, Conductors, Music Coordinator

We require semi-experienced drummer/percussionists and experienced horn players to perform at what we hope will be the largest live music event in Burning Man’s history. Due to the anticipated size of the performance, we are also hoping to secure two conductors and a coordinator for the group. Please contact us if you feel you might be the right person for any of these positions. See www.trojanhorse2011.com/music for a general description of the score.

Preferred experience level of the players
Rhythmically, the piece is fairly straightforward and there may be room for less experienced drummers and percussionists to join. As to what kinds of drums and percussion we are looking for, we have no limitations but we may ask you to mute or dampen your instruments so as to not interfere with the tonality of the horn parts.

The brass parts on the other hand are more involved and due to the cacophony of the crowd and lack of amplification, it is necessary to have capable players who can follow notation and take musical instruction from the conductors. Although we are looking for brass/ horn players, if you have an instrument that you think may add a unique quality to the piece we encourage you to tell us about it.
