We are starting construction at NIMBY (E. Oakland)!
Here’s the evidence:

On the playa, the horse will be surrounded by many Trojan War characters and Greek deities, that will guide and complement the horse’s inherent interactivity with a blend of erudition, flair, wit, humor, and drama.
Meet Gary, who’s gonna take on the important role of Dionysus for us:
Did you miss the Desert Arts Preview in SF? Unless you’re one of the couple hundred folks who made it out, then YES YOU DID.
Burning Man put up a recording (sound and screenshots) of all the presentations. You’ll hear Burning Man’s Bettie June introduce the Trojan Horse as a contender for one of the biggest mobile art projects in the world and then you get to hear Douglas present the horse starting around 40:30.
We got our first black paper horse! And we love it. The dark color just feels right on this beautiful menacing beast.
His name is Bucephalus, named after Alexander the Great’s horse – one of the most famous actual horses of antiquity! (And did you know that Alexander was supposedly a descendent of Achilles – a hero of the Trojan War?)
Bucephalus’ creator Pikey/Kyle followed our folding instructions and build him with black posterboard (by tracing the template form onto the board with a buck knife) and black electrical tape (to block out light coming through the cracks).

Meet Alma/Yabbasha who in August will help us erect the beast on the playa.
She’s a nomadic Mexican, a qualified architect, who has a passion for photography, drawing, literature, graphics novels and cinema. Besides her architecture degrees she is still struggling with a MSc. in art and technology. After Mexico, Argentina, the French Riviera, Sweden, Macau and Hong Kong, she’s now positioned in Singapore, where she works on big construction projects and explores all islands in south-east Asia.
To help us reach our Kickstarter goal, Alma went ahead and announced she’d shave her head if her co-workers would donate $500 for the horse!
Here’s her account of how it went from a lighthearted dare one evening to a rather serious shaving session the next morning:A view more images of the Horse-athon event at the Artemis’ horse farm in Seattle (event recap).
Vancouver is making a big splash at ‘Burning Man 2011 : Rites of Passage’ in the realms of large scale art installations. So much so that Meghan (Megs) Rutigliano, Regional Network and Media Relations Coordinator for the Burning Man Project, will visit Vancouver, Wednesday June 22 and Thursday June 24 to meet with the Regional Contacts and leads from the three main Vancouver BM art projects – The Temple, Playa Time, and The Trojan Horse – being organized and built (in whole or in part) here this year.
We invite you to come out for a casual meet & greet with Megs and the Vancouver Regional contact. Several leads from all 3 projects will be present to share info on how you can get involved here or on playa. All projects are actively looking for collaborators!
Vancouver Mix of Hot and Cool
Fresh green salad gave way to hot bodies dancing in front of the living room fire (thanks to the awesome mixes by Aaron Rideitout and Geordie Rawthorne) at the Vancouver Trojan Horse-athon BBQ / FUNdraiser. Amongst the crowd: LA director Todd Darling. Hosts, Artistic Director and Vancouver Administrator, Douglas Bevans and Alaya Boisvert, raffled prizes and set up a cash bar of fine beers and single malt scotch to raise money for the project. The $500 of net proceeds – contributed by friends and strangers alike – will buy this beast the 4×4, beams and internal platform for the horse’s head and neck. Sweeeet!
See some hot video footage from the party:
While the weather looked dicey most of the day, it never even sprinkled, and the bucolic, hillside horse farm where Artemis (Nina) lives was the perfect setting for the Seattle Horse-athon. A six-year-old Trojan soldier named Aidan won the best costume award, edging out that beautiful bear Callisto (Marina). To win best performance, Artemis thrice shot flaming arrows through a hoop held by Eric (who never did get into his Homer costume). Even the horses kicked up their heels to the beats of DJ Wires, Amanita, and Osiris. As darkness descended, the fire spinners brought the evening to a close. Byron Go was the guy who made this party go. Hats off to him and to the kitchen crew for such great food. Lotsa photography/video soon to be posted.
